The Afro-Cosmologist's Treatise on The Astrolabe (2024) - Miriam Hilawi Abraham, Nasra Abdulahi
Presented at the 14th Shanghai Biennale.
The Afro-Cosmologist’s Treatise on The Astrolabe is the product of ongoing research-based collaboration between Miriam Hilawi Abraham and Nasra Abdullahi.
The narrative fiction, research and installation is concerned with ‘excavating futures’ buried where the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean converge. Borrowing from the twelth-cnetury Andalusian polymath Ibn Arabi’s concept of time as a “notch in a cirlce .. a ration of distances,” the story is driven by a series of temporal displacements triggered by a dysfunctional astrolabe.
For the installation, I created a sonic composition where I performed a reading of Abraham’s and Abdullahi’s short story Horn of Africa Grounds for Unproof.
